Intensive Outpatient Groups

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Calm Gardens Therapy What is IOP?

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a type of mental health treatment that offers more support than traditional weekly therapy, but is less intensive than inpatient or residential care. IOP is designed for people who need frequent, structured help with emotional or behavioral challenges, but who do not need to stay overnight in a hospital or treatment center.

At Calm Gardens Therapy, our IOP is offered to children (age 8+), teens, and adults who are struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional ups and downs, anger, or difficulties in relationships.

Why Am I Being Referred to IOP?

You may be referred to IOP for several reasons:

  • You need more support than weekly therapy can provide. If you’re finding it hard to manage daily life, emotions, or relationships with just once-a-week sessions, IOP offers more frequent help.
  • You are stepping down from a higher level of care. If you’ve recently completed inpatient, residential, or partial hospitalization treatment, IOP helps you transition back to everyday life while still receiving strong support.
  • You are stepping up from outpatient therapy. If your symptoms have become more challenging, IOP provides extra structure and guidance to help you stabilize and build skills.
  • You want to learn practical skills and coping strategies. IOP groups focus on teaching tools for managing stress, emotions, and relationships in a supportive environment.

What Can I Expect in IOP?

IOP at Calm Gardens Therapy includes:

  • Group Therapy: You’ll join others with similar challenges in small group sessions led by experienced therapists. Groups focus on topics like coping skills, emotional regulation, trauma recovery, mindfulness, and healthy relationships.
  • Individual Therapy: Each week, you’ll have a private session with your therapist to talk about personal goals, progress, and any concerns you have.
  • Specialized Support: Our program uses evidence-based therapies (such as CBT, DBT, and EMDR when appropriate) and includes clinical biofeedback sessions to help you learn how your body responds to stress and practice calming techniques.
  • Family Involvement: For children and teens, we encourage family participation and offer support to parents and caregivers.
  • Personalized Care: Your treatment plan is tailored to your needs, and our team works with your referring provider to make sure you get the right level of support.

How Does IOP Work?

  • Attendance: You’ll attend group sessions twice a week and have one individual therapy session weekly. All sessions are held in person at our comfortable conference room location.
  • Duration: Most clients participate in IOP for several weeks to a few months, depending on their needs and progress.
  • Insurance and Payment: We accept Medicaid and most major commercial insurance plans. Self-pay options are available. The cost of workbooks and materials is included—there are no extra fees.

Is IOP Right For Me or My Child?

IOP can be helpful if you (or your child) are:

  • Feeling overwhelmed by emotions or stress
  • Having trouble coping with daily life, school, or relationships
  • Recovering from trauma or recent hospitalization
  • Looking for a structured, supportive environment to build skills and confidence

If you’re unsure whether IOP is the right fit, our intake team can help guide you through the process and answer any questions.
